Choosing a Workshop Level

We have three levels of workshops for Saturday. Here is a guide to help you determine which level is right for you.

  • New to the dance, either very few lessons or just never took blues classes before.
  • Excited to focus on fundamentals again.
  • Want to learn how to dance in a different role.
  • You can identify music appropriate for Jookin' blues dances, and Ballroomin' blues dances.
  • You can comfortably lead and/or follow a partner into and out of Close Embrace, Closed, Open and Break Away connections.
  • You have an understanding of pulse, posture, connection and grounding as elements of the blue aesthetic.
  • You are familiar with dances such as mooch, grind, funky butt, knee rock, four corners, and fishtail and want to learn more idiom dances.
  • You can lead and/or follow momentum based patterns and turns- or feel ready to learn them.
  • You are thirsty for more moves and dance vocabulary.
  • All of the descriptions of silver are true of you.
  • You teach in your local scene and beyond.
  • You make finals in national competitions, (or do not compete and dance well enough to win if you wanted)
  • You have movement control and body awareness.
  • You dance with awareness of these elements of the blues aesthetic: poly meter, poly rhythms, ephebism, poly centrism, asymmetry, broken lines, and lag.
  • You regularly dance at least 5 blues idiom dances.
Workshop Description
Triple Step Blues
Kenneth Shipp
Come learn about two fantastic triple step dances, Chicago and Piedmont. Learn the backgrounds behind these two dances, key differences between them, and hear/dance to songs that exemplify the aesthetic from classic Chicago and Piedmont/Appalachien blues musicians.
Be Inspired: Why dance?
Flouer Evelyn
In this class we are going to dance. a lot. We will think about things like: "Who am I when I partner dance?" "How does my perspective change my dance?" "When does my partner influence my movement?" "Is it our dance or my dance?" Be prepared to find new ways to find inspiriation by going deep into the question "Why Dance?". Guaranteed to give you something to bring to the dance floor.
Solo Blues: moves Challenge
Julie Brown
Time to open the encyclopedia of solo blues. In this class, we'll whip through up to 30 solo blues moves, and then it'll be time for a test! Get ready; this test is for your body and your brain.
Blues and the Gospel
Cierra Ruffin
Let Cierra take you to church. Black church that is! Come explore the relationship between gospel music and the Devil's music, aka the blues. The Blues couldn't have existed without the church and many of your favorite musicians started there. This class will be an enlighteniing experience you won't soon forget.
