Champions Blues Idiom Mix and Match

What is it? Do you know your Fishtail from your Funky Butt? Can you Strut, Shake & Bake, and Slow Drag? This comp is all about knowing your idioms and what kind of music they go with. If you need a refresher, here’s a list of dances.
Who can enter? This competition is open to Snowbound dance instructors from any year, dancers invited in our 2012 Invitational, and anyone who has placed 1st-3rd in a Snowbound comp (all levels) before.
How much does it cost? $10 (USD) per dancer
When is it? Finals at 1am during the Saturday dance.
How is it judged?

You will be expected to dance identifiable blues idiom dances and correlate them properly with the genre of blues music. Failure to dance specific identifiable blues idiom dances could result in disqualification. Judging Categories: Blues Aesthetic, Connection, Musicality, Individual Quality of Movement, and Creativity.

In prelims we will have two heats. Competitors will be asked to judge the other heat. There will also be 4 non-competing judges assigned to judge both heats. The Final requires competitors to peer-review the other finalists.

Open Strictly

What is it? If you do NOT qualify for the Champions comp, we’d love to see you compete in either our Strictly or Social comps. A Strictly is a competition where you bring your own partner and show us what you can do to a variety of songs.
Who can enter? Anyone who is yet to place 1st-3rd in a SBB comp or Blues Blaze comp, and has never been a SBB instructor.
How much does it cost? $20 (USD) per couple
When is it? Finals at 11:45pm during the Saturday dance
How is it judged? You’ll be judged on your Blues Aesthetic, your musicality, your partnership, and your Creativity

Social Mix and Match

What is it? Blues is a social dance, and we value the way our dancers create partnerships on the dance floor. In this comp anyone can compete (except those entered in the Champions Mix and Match) AND anyone can judge, so be prepared to have fun! During the prelims you’ll do exactly what you would normally do on the social floor, and we’ll select a number of folks to go forward to a more traditional-style final. In finals the MC will announce if the song is appropriate for Ballroomin’ or Jookin’ blues dance styles. You will be expected to choose your movement accordingly.
Who can enter? Anyone who is yet to place 1st-3rd in a SBB comp, and has never been a SBB instructor.
How much does it cost? $10 (USD) per dancer
When is it? Prelims – 11pm-1am during the Friday dance. Finals – 11:45 pm during the Saturday dance
How is it judged? You’ll be judged on your blues content, your partnership, your skills, but most importantly your sense of FUN. Finalists will be expected to show their Blues Aesthetic and musicality.
