Workshop Levels

We will not be holding auditions for this years SnowBound Blues. Please note the guidelines below in class level selection on your registration form. This will help us plan for class balance.

Bronze Level

This is a fundamental learning experience ideal for dancers that are new to blues or who have never attended formal series classes in blues dance. This is also a great choice for more experienced dancers that would like to focus on the essentials of this dance in their non-primary dance role.

Silver Level

This group of students will be about 40% of event attendees.

Gold Level

This group of students will be about 40% of event attendees.

Masters Level Add-On

This group is roughly 10% of attendees. This list of traits is common among master level dancers but you do not need to have all of them. If you are interested in the Masters add-on you will be asked to add the name of an instructor who can vouch for your skills.

Class Descriptions

Bronze Jukin Idiom Intensive - Mike & Dan

We're going to pick 2-3 jukin idioms and build them up from scratch to style. Jookin' Blues Idiom Intensive

Silver Jukin Idiom Intensive - Grey & Nathaniel

Gimme that funk, that sweet, that nasty, that gushi stuff. So you’ve got the basics but do you have style? Dancers often forget there is more to dance than just moving. You have to express! We’ll get you out of that rut in your idiom styling and open doors of possibilities with some new idioms. When the faster, funkier music comes on, you’ll know what to do.

Gold Jukin Idiom Intensive - Julie & Kenneth

In this jookin’ intensive, we’ll dive into details of close embrace fishtails, grind, & four corners, pull apart some different versions of slow drag, and get real assy with funky butt. We won't be spending time on the basics of these dances, so please come with knowledge already under your belt.

Bronze Ballroomin' Blues Idiom Intensive - Grey & Nathaniel

Cool your jazz - Join Grey and Nathaniel for an overview of the idioms that came out of the black ballrooms! We will get you moving, turning and gliding while keeping that blues coolness we all love. After some quirky exercises, great music, and maybe even a little flash, you’ll never want to leave the dance floor again...

Silver Ballroomin' Blues Idiom Intensive - Julie & Kenneth

"The Strut: zero to sixty" - The strut is a stylish ballroomin' blues dance from New Orleans, defined by its particular walk & body shaping. In this class, we'll start with the basics of the dance, then get into musicality & styling options, and a few moves too.

Gold Ballroomin' Blues Idiom Intensive - Mike & Dan

For this class, we're going to build on your basic Stride, and challenge you musically and physically. Please note that this is not going to be a from-scratch class, so students in this class should already be familiar with the basics of The Stride.

All Levels! HOW AWESOME ARE WE? - Caroline McBride

In this class we will self-evaluate our own dancing and have a great time doing it! Fun, friendly, can opt in or out of giving and receiving feedback. Low stress.

Masters Followers Voice in Pure Following - Joy & Kenneth

In this class we will discuss and examine personal ideas about following from both the perspective of the lead and the follow. We will then tear apart and unpack elements that may be accurate or inaccurate behind each of those ideas. We will have exercises and creative exploratory practice to further examine these concepts.

All Levels! Idiom sampler - Mike & Dan

In this class we will discuss and examine personal ideas about following from both the perspective of the lead and the follow. We will then tear apart and unpack elements that may be accurate or inaccurate behind each of those ideas. We will have exercises and creative exploratory practice to further examine these concepts.

All Levels! Solo 101 - Grey Ruffin

Most partner dancers HATE solo dancing. I'm here to change your mind, help you get over your nerves, and get you Jammin'! Maybe you got into blues for the connection, but if ya want to be a good partner ya got to be good solo. We'll be exploring movements, emotions, and riffin' so you can feel confident starting your own jam. Yes, you.

Masters Solo Blues Inspired by Vintage Clips - Julie Brown

Get ready to work! In the first half, we'll get low-down with some gutbucket moves--rolling, twisting, and moving in the waist--taking inspiration from dancers like Sandra Gibson, Al Minns, & James Berry. In the second half, we'll move to more footwork-based moves, getting inspiration from Linda Hopkins, Juniors Wells, and others.

All Levels! Blues History - Mike & Dan

We'll present a woefully incomplete choreomusical geohistory of blues in the U.S. part dance history, part music history, and way more information than we can reasonably fit into one class.
